Mesquite , also known as algorroba ( Prosopis juliflora ) is a leguminous plants mainly in South America and southern North America where it is used as a natural sweetener .
It has many health benefits
The seed pods from the tree contains a powerful blend of vitamins, minerals and substances that help the body to form the natural ” feel-good ” neurotransmitter serotonin , which makes us both better and happier. Besides that mesquite content large amounts of nutrients, protein and fiber, it also has a very low glycemic index . Which helps to keep the blood sugar in check and makes us feel fuller longer .
A caramel-like flavor
And last but not least, it tastes good! Of course, this is perhaps one of the biggest advantages of Mesquite powder. The powder has a taste similar to a bit woody, dry caramel. It is a rich , deep, complex flavor that is perfect to use as a supplement or substitute to a variety of dishes where needed sweetening. I often use it in smoothies to enhance the flavor and Raw food treats. But it can be used almost anywhere.
Hot Carob with Mesquite (two cups)
2 cup plant based milk (I used soy milk this time )
3 tablespoons carob
1 tablespoon mesquitepulver
1 tablespoon honey (optional)
A little cinnamon (optional)
Pour the milk into a saucepan and whisk in remaining ingredients. Heat until it becomes a smooth drink and until it is hot enough. Pour into cups and sprinkle with cinnamon. Enjoy this as a simple evening meal or as a really lovely and good snacks.
